I painted this after my grandfather, Joe Fruscione, died. I have many memories spending time with him by the ocean. The styrofoam cord around the canvas represents the rope that he used to tie around the jetties when we went crabbing. We cannot ultimately hold onto the ocean (or the sand) just like we cannot hold onto the ones we love the most. There is a beauty in the human impulse to make, to create and to try to hold on.
