I began River by placing mortar in the center of the canvas and writing “this is the place where words wash away.” Next, I spelled words with their letters out of order. I filled in the rest of the image with thinned blue, black and gray acrylic paint to represent water and included glitter to replicate the sun’s reflection on the water. In this piece, I am playing with the idea that words can be as permanent as cement and as mobile as water in a river. They are a force of solidity that captures the human experience and a force of life moving through the world.
