This piece incorporates memories along with motifs of fire, smoke and the body. The shapes and colors at the center of the canvas are deliberately ambiguous. Some people have seen a woman; others have seen a dress or an elk. This was my first attempt at free-writing on a larger canvas, a prospect that felt scary because of the ease with which people could read the words. I enjoy working in a larger format these days; larger canvases still allow me to communicate intimately with the viewer and rather directly with myself.
